Myopia (2020) by Sana Akroud
Myopia traces the journey of Fatem, an indigenous Amazigh woman, wife, and mother who travels from her remote village in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco to the metropolitan city, Casablanca, to repair an essential tool. In her village, the only educated person who can read is the "Sheikh," an elderly religious authority. When his glasses break there is a collective crisis. Although pregnant, Fatem is distraught she will not be able to hear what her migrant husband might write to her and thus finds courage to descend to the city alone. There she experiences a series of situations and socially exploitative encounters that will test her purpose, knowledge, and religious faith. What starts as a service for the community becomes an inner revolution.
